Little bird sesame street3/12/2024 ![]() ![]() We also get to hear Big Bird imitate the others' voices in these videos. Later on, Random House Home Video also did similar "Picturemation" adaptations of "Sesame Street" books, with Caroll Spinney reading them all in character as Big Bird. The only other Muppeteers in those videos were Frank Oz and Fran Brill (the latter also narrated this story.) When Golden Book Video did those limited-animation adaptations of certain "Sesame Street" books in 1985, Caroll Spinney reprised the roles of Big Bird and Oscar. Also back then, Jim Henson performed Little Bird, but then the following year, Fran Brill took over the role. ![]() Note how Caroll's early Big Bird voice sounds almost like Ernie at times! I love it when Big Bird rests his head on the wall next to Little Bird. This is when Big Bird first met Little Bird. Instead of an innocent childlike bird (according to the show, Big Bird is six years old), he acted more like a clumsy yokel, and the puppet looked more weird as well. In the first season, Big Bird was so different. The 1985 feature film "Follow That Bird" opened with a spoof of "Patton" with Oscar singing "The Grouch Anthem!"Īt one point, Caroll Spinney fabricated a neat concept.īruno the Trashman! He was a full-bodied Muppet that Caroll Spinney performed as, and could operate Oscar from within the puppet suit, allowing Oscar to be mobile in his trash can without always having to walk in the can (done by a different actor wearing green furry feet.) It was a cool idea, but eventually they stopped after the Bruno puppet suit deteriorated, and they didn't bother to build a new one. These songs did not get featured on the show itself, but Big Bird did get to do an on-screen performance of one song on "The Dick Cavett" show when the Muppet troupe made an appearance in the Thanksgiving 1971 episode. For instance, one thing I enjoyed was how Caroll Spinney could even have Big Bird rollerskate!Ĭan you imagine how difficult that must be?īig Bird sang a few songs on 1971's "The Muppet Alphabet Album," which I had on compact cassette as a kid. Tonight I'm going to share for you some fun moments of Big Bird and Oscar. (My mother has always been fond of him as well, and sometimes likes to use Oscar's old catchphrase "Ding-dong, you're wrong!")īy the end of the 90s, though, Elmo had pretty much become the main Muppet star of "Sesame Street." Even today, Big Bird is still basically now Elmo and Abby Cadabby's sidekick. Even if Oscar was a grouch, he was still such a fun character. Of course, I grew up watching the show in the early 90s when Spinney was still going strong as Big Bird and Oscar, and at such a young age, I was able to easily recognize both characters. Even when he was in his 70s, he'd still perform in the Big Bird puppet suit, which is not an easy feat at any age. It's amazing how dedicated Spinney was to his roles, and doing it for so long. The entertainment world is abuzz with the fact that Caroll Spinney, the original and main performer for "Sesame Street"'s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch since the show began in 1969, is retiring from the show at age 84, after 49 years with the series.
